In these poor economic times there is likely to be an increase in kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects by homeowners. Tough times in the real estate market generally persuade many homeowners to seek alternatives to building or buying new homes; alternatively opting to convert basements into living areas, building an addition on their home, renovating their bathroom, or remodeling their kitchen to replace old cabinets, countertops, and home lighting with newer, energy efficient, and updated styles.
When it comes to kitchen and bathroom remodeling there are many options to choose from and sometimes an undertaking of this nature can be complicated and costly. It is important to consider many factors, so to help in that regard the following is a list of some important tips.
CONSIDER YOUR INVESTMENT OPTIONS
Homeowners should first get a general idea of what they want to change, the feasibility of the change, and the overall cost of the change so they don't over budget their kitchen or bathroom remodeling project.
One of the best methods is to get some ideas from contractors. However, don't just take the advise of one or two contractors -- get three or four opinions. Their expertise in the structure and construction of your kitchen or bathroom will help substantially in making your final choice. Most contractors will usually provide you with an estimate of the overall cost of your kitchen and bathroom remodeling project, so this will give you a general idea as to what your overall budget will be. I know that M&K, Inc., Countertops and Cabinets, Waukesha, Wisconsin provides excellent services and estimate evaluation for homeowners in helping to evaluate and assess their remodeling options.
CHOOSE QUALITY PRODUCTS
It is important to be wary of certain products offered by some contractors. In many cases if their price is the most affordable it will mean that the kitchen cabinets or countertops they are offering with their services are not the best quality. This is especially true for kitchen and bathroom cabinets.
Cabinets are either good, or they are junk! Do not cut corners on your cabinetry -- choose solid, wooden cabinets with quality hardware. Although the appearance of some kitchen and bathroom cabinets may have an appealing look, within a year or two the doors may start to fall off, or the veneer will be swelling or peeling due to moisture infiltration. Countertops fall under the same category -- either they are good quality or they are junk! However, the most important factor that applies to assessing the quality of countertops is thickness.
Ready-made laminate countertops are generally constructed from a 3/4 inch medium-density fiberboard (MDF) board and melamine plastic layers at the top and bottom, which generally adds up to countertop thickness of about one inch. This standard thickness is designed to hold the fixtures of a typical American kitchen counter: a sink, dish washer, dish drainer, dishes and utensils, some pots and pans, perhaps a microwave oven or toaster... However, perhaps you have heavy kitchen appliances that need greater support than which the standard constructed countertops noted above offer? In that case you should consider thicker countertop variety.
Choosing quality products is relatively simple if you know what your looking for and where to look. Before you make your choice be sure to review the description of the product and make sure that it is the same as detailed on the contract offered by the contractor.
MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS WARRANTY COVERAGE
There are two warranty options; the product manufacturer warranty, and the contractor workmanship warranty. READ THEM!
The most important is the manufacturer warranty for your kitchen or bathroom cabinets. Make sure the product has substantial (minimum of 5 years) coverage on any product defects. It is also important to clarify this coverage with the manufacturer. If they are credible they will have no problem of going over the details with you.
Second is the importance of the contractors workmanship warranty coverage. Is it prorated or non-prorated? What does the warranty cover and for how long? A Non-prorated warranty offers the best coverage because it does not cost you a thing in the event of defects in workmanship and the manufacturer's product.
Some sound expert advise is that if it costs you a few extra dollars to have the non-prorated warranty coverage option applied to your kitchen or bathroom cabinets or countertops, TAKE IT!
nice guide! thank you!/I love it ! Very creative ! That's actually really cool Thanks.
